Amid our Sunday MLB schedule, we’ve got a nice afternoon matchup between the Oakland Athletics and the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
This will be game three of the weekend series between these teams. In Friday’s opener, the A’s snagged three runs in the second inning on the way to a solid 8-5 victory. On Saturday, the Blue Jays struck back, pummeling the Athletics 9-3.
USA TODAY Sports
In Sunday’s game, Oakland will be wheeling out left-hander Eric Surkamp for the start. Across 14.2 innings in three starts so far, Surkamp has logged a 3.68 ERA with a 1.64 WHIP. In his most recent appearance Tuesday against the Yankees, Surkamp was a little shaky with two runs in 5.2 innings with seven hits and three Ks.
The A’s hitters have been fairly solid overall this season, but have had some rough spots just like everyone else. Jed Lowrie has come on with 19 hits, six runs and 10 RBI thus far, while Stephen Vogt has 17 hits with eight runs. Josh Reddick and Marcus Semien have been the power hitters, with seven homers and 17 RBI between them. Both Reddick and Semien have struggled with their BA this season, however. Semien’s average sits at .196, and Reddick had Saturday off.
Looking at the Blue Jays, they’ll be giving the start to Drew Hutchison on Sunday. Hutchison is coming up as a spot-starter here after logging a 4.11 ERA and a 20/6 K/BB ratio over 15.1 innings at the Triple-A level.
It’s easy to find talent in the Toronto batting order; it’s one of the most formidable in the league. Josh Donaldson has been cruising with 23 hits, seven homers, 18 runs and 19 RBI. Edwin Encarnacion has 11 RBI, eight runs and 20 hits, but came up empty on Saturday. Jose Bautista has also been solid overall with 16 hits, 11 runs and 14 RBI.
The Athletics are 2-5 in their last seven Sunday games, and 4-1 in their last five game threes of a series. As for Toronto, they’re 4-0 in their last four Sunday games. The Blue Jays are also 4-0 in Hutchison’s last four starts against the American League West.
I’m going to stick with the A’s here, as I like Surkamp better in the pitching matchup against Hutchison. We should see enough Oakland firepower at the plate to get a victory.
