Monday evening at Comerica Park, we’ve got a pretty good-looking MLB series opener coming between the Oakland Athletics and the Detroit Tigers.
The Athletics are coming off a weekend series against the Blue Jays in Toronto, splitting the first two games. In the finale on Sunday, the Blue Jays got another victory to give Oakland a series loss 2-1 and a 10-9 record overall on the year.

As for the Tigers, they were at home against the Indians over the weekend. Detroit dropped the first two games by a combined score of 12-2, then on Sunday lost again as Cleveland triumphed 6-3 for the sweep.
The A’s will be rolling with right-hander Kendall Graveman on Monday for the opener of this series. Over three starts so far, Graveman has logged a 1-1 record with a 2.04 ERA and a 0-91 WHIP. During his last appearance, Graveman posted just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings Wednesday against the Yankees.
Oakland has had a few bumps in the road offensively, but overall their lineup is solid. Jed Lowrie has posted 19 hits with 10 RBI (Lowrie is currently nursing a minor calf injury and didn’t play Sunday), while Josh Reddick has 16 hits with 11 RBI and four homers. Marcus Semien is the team’s power hitter thus far, with four homers but a paltry .186 BA. Semien went 0-for-3 on Sunday.
Detroit is giving Monday’s start to right-hander Jordan Zimmermann. In his three starts this year, Zimmermann is a stellar 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. There had been some concerns about Zimmermann’s reduced velocity this year, but he’s worked around it through his 19.1 innings and 15/6 K/BB ratio.
At the plate, the Tigers boast some heavy hitters. Ian Kinsler leads the way with 25 hits, 15 runs and 12 RBI. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has also come on strong with six homers and 15 RBI. Saltalamacchia came up empty on Sunday, however. As for team star Miguel Cabrera, he’s currently sitting on 13 hits and seven runs but has just a .206 BA.
The Athletics are 4-0 in their last four games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15, and 7-2 in their last nine road games. The Tigers, meanwhile, are 1-4 in their last five against the American League West and 1-4 in their last five Monday games.
This should be a great series. I’m rolling with Zimmermann and the Tigers in the opener and hoping he can maintain what’s been an amazing start to the season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Graveman hold his own here as well, though.
