The Houston Astros are looking to make a move up the AL West standings when they visit the Oakland Athletics Friday.
At this point of the season the Houston Astros have to be one of the biggest surprises in the game and not in a good way with a 7-15 record and defeats in seven of ten. Consistency in all phases has been an issue although the team will be looking to build on a 7-4 victory at Seattle on Wednesday. Astros starter Collin McHugh upped his record to 2-3 with a pair of runs scored on five hits and a walk over five innings of work. The Stros logged nine hits and a walked three times with Jose Altuve going 3-5 with a homer, two RBI’s and three runs while Evan Gattis cracked a bases loaded double for three RBI’s. The Houston Astros send Mike Fiers to the mound in search of his third consecutive victory. Fiers comes off of an 8-3 decision versus the Red Sox where he gave up two runs on five hits and two BB over 5.1 innings.

The Oakland Athletics saw an opportunity to make up some ground in the American League West go by the wayside in a 7-3 defeat at Detroit on Thursday afternoon. The Athletics took an early lead but the offense never got going and early woes on the mound were costly. A’s starter Chris Bassitt fell to 0-2 with all seven runs plated on ten hits and three bases on balls through 3.2 frames. Oakland could not keep up at the plate with six hits and nine walks with Stephen Vogt smacking a solo jack while Josh Reddick and Khris Davis connecting on RBI singles that scored Billy Burns. Rookie Sean Manaea will be called up from the minors to start the series opener versus the Houston Astros. At AAA Nashville Manaea has made three starts and has gone 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
The over is 11-3 in Houston’s last 14 road games and the Astros are 2-7 in their last 9 overall while going 2-7 in their last 9 games on grass. The over is 6-1-1 in Oakland’s last 8 overall and the under is 6-2 in their last 8 home games while the Athletics are 8-20 in their last 28 Friday games. The over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Oakland. Really not a whole lot to like here so take this with a grain of salt…
