The rival New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will be finishing up their weekend series early Sunday evening in a nationally-televised matchup from Fenway Park.
This is game three of the set. In Friday’s opening game, the Red Sox struck first with a 4-2 victory. On Saturday, things got out of hand as Boston flat-out embarrassed New York on an 8-0 win and a 2-0 series lead.
For Sunday’s marquis matchup, the Yankees will be trotting out right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. Although he started out the year on a shaky note, Eovaldi has evened out in his past couple of appearances with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 24.2 overall innings and a 1-2 record in four starts. Back on Monday in his most recent outing, Eovaldi logged seven shutout frames in an eventual 3-1 win over the Rangers.

The veteran Yankees lineup has had their fair share of success and disappointment at the plate already this year. Starlin Castro has been very solid with his 25 hits and 12 RBI. As for Carlos Beltran, he’s got 21 hits, 11 runs and four homers. Alex Rodriguez has managed four homers and eight RBI, but has just a .185 BA thus far. Rodriguez whiffed in Saturday’s game with an 0-for-3 line.
Left-hander David Price will be making the start on Sunday for the Red Sox. Price has a 3-0 record over five starts and 29.2 total innings this year, but has been pretty uneven on a 5.76 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Back in his last appearance against the Braves, Price shook off some early struggles to log 14 strikeouts in eight innings with two earned.
The Red Sox batting order features a glut of run-producing prowess. Dustin Pedroia has been electric so far on 32 hits, 18 runs and 13 RBI. Pedroia came up empty on Saturday, however. Mookie Betts has blasted four homers among his 29 hits with 19 runs. Betts collected three more RBI on Saturday. David Ortiz is even getting in on the action with 25 hits, five homers, 19 RBI and 11 doubles.
The Yankees are 4-0 in Eovaldi’s last four Sunday starts, but just 1-4 in their last five game threes of a series.
As for the Red Sox, they’re 6-1 in their last seven overall and 5-1 in their last six games against a team with a winning percentage below .400.
Sox-Yankees is always a great matchup to watch if you’re a baseball fan, and this one should be no different. I’m giving Boston the edge here, however, thanks to that potent offense and Price’s sky-high potential--not to mention how horrid the Yankees look lately.
