The Washington Nationals shoot for the road sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday.
The Washington Nationals earned their second straight win versus St. Louis behind some early scoring and airtight pitching in a 6-1 victory on Saturday. The Nationals handed starter Joe Ross a four run cushion in the first and he made it work with a run plated on six hits and a pair of BB over six frames to move his record to 3-0. The Nats did their damage on six hits and five walks with Jason Werth cracking a first inning grand slam while Daniel Murphy drove in a run and scored. The Washington Nationals turn to Max Scherzer on the bump Sunday looking for the sweep of the Cardinals. Scherzer comes off a 4-3 loss to Philadelphia where he gave up three runs on seven hits and four BB over six frames.

The St. Louis Cardinals have not looked out of the ordinary and will have their work cut out for them in a very tough National League Central. Early pitching woes and a lack of offense produced the expected result Saturday and now the Redbirds face the possibility of getting swept in their own backyard. Cards starter Jaime Garcia lasted 6.1 innings but he surrendered a grand slam in the first and the team never recovered. St. Louis mustered eight hits and two free passes with Matt Carpenter driving in Ruben Tejada with the only run. The St. Louis Cardinals hope to avoid getting swept at home when unbeaten Carlos Martinez gets the ball Sunday versus the Nationals. Martinez is off to a 4-0 start with a 1.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP.
The under is 8-3-1 in Washington’s last 12 overall and is 8-3-1 in their last 12 on grass while going 18-7-2 in their last 27 road games. St. Louis are 86-39 in their last 125 home games and the over is 5-0-3 in Martinez’s last 8 home starts while the Cardinals are 21-5 in Martinez’s last 26 starts. Washington are 7-19 in the last 26 meetings. This might be better to watch then bet but I’ll back the home team to avoid the sweep…
