Monday evening in MLB action at Busch Stadium, we’ve got the opener of an early-week series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Philadelphia is coming off a three-game sweep against the Indians, which gives the Phillies a six-game winning streak during which they’ve outscored their opponents 20-13.

As for the Cardinals, they whiffed in a weekend series against the Nationals, dropping Friday’s opener 5-4 and the final two matchups by a 6-1 tally each day. That’s four straight losses for St. Louis overall.
Making the Monday start for the Phillies will be right-hander Jeremy Hellickson. So far over five starts in 2016, Hellickson has logged a 2-1 record with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 26 total innings. Back on Wednesday in his most recent appearance, Hellickson managed seven shutout innings against the Nationals with eight strikeouts.
The Phillies have managed just enough offense to get the proverbial job done this season. Odubel Herrera leads the way on 25 hits with 15 runs, while Maikel Franco isn’t far off with 24 hits, five homers and 14 RBI. Ryan Howard has a rough .195 BA, but has provided five homers and 10 RBI.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, we’ll be seeing right-hander Adam Wainwright taking the mound. It’s been an overall rough year for Wainwright thus far, as he’s carrying a bloated 7.16 ERA with a 1.70 WHIP over 27.2 innings and a 1-3 record in his five starts. That said, Wainwright was a little better on Wednesday in his first win of the year, however, with one walk and five strikeouts against the Diamondbacks.
The Cardinals offense has done its collective best to overcome their pitching difficulties this season. Aledmys Diaz has been the surprise breakout this year on 30 hits with 18 runs, four homers and 13 RBI. Yadier Molina has left his injury issues in the dust with 28 hits, 10 RBI and a .329 BA. Brandon Moss leads the team in homers with 6, and has 15 RBI and 17 runs.
The Phillies are on a six-game win streak, but are just 8-22 in their last 30 against the National League Central and 8-21 in their last 29 Monday games. As for the Cardinals, they’re 6-1 in Wainwright’s last seven starts with four days’ rest and 20-8 in Wainwright’s last 28 home starts overall.
This seems a crazy thing to say, but I like Philadelphia in this matchup. The Cardinals are in a tailspin and I don’t trust Wainwright to do much of anything these days. The line is pretty attractive as well.
