The Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics continue their AL West division battle at the Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mariners send King Felix to the bump on Wednesday as he looks to continue his strong start to the year and a road start against a division rival would be a huge outing for one the league’s most consistent arms over the last handful of seasons. Seattle made some moves in the offseason to put them in the running for the AL West title and with Houston off to a slow start and the Rangers battling inconsistencies the Mariners are right in the mix and should be for the course of the season. Hernandez is 2-2 with a sparkling 1.38 ERA and he will face off against Sean Manaea who is 0-0 with a 7.20 ERA and has yet to factor in to a decision.

The Athletics meanwhile are 13-14 this season and have actually played some pretty solid baseball so far as many expected they would be divisional basement dwellers this season. Oakland does have some pretty solid pitchers in their rotation despite a slow start from Sonny Gray and guys like Kendall Graveman and Rich Hill have been very good but their lineup isn’t great and will need to step up in a big way against some of the league’s more prolific offenses that reside in the AL West.
The Mariners are 5-1 in their last six road games, 4-1 in their last five against the AL West, and 5-1 in Felix’s last six Wednesday starts while the A’s are 8-20 in their last 28 home games, 4-10 in their last 14 Wednesday outings, and 3-7 in their last 10 overall which doesn’t bode well for them here against King Felix. Hernandez hasn’t been rewarded for his excellent start with just two wins in four tries but he adds to it here against the A’s.
