The San Diego Padres clash with the Chicago Cubs in the night cap of their twin bill Wednesday.
Fans of the game and those that follow the San Diego Padres know the team has struggled to consistently score and that is a trend that’s been prominent for years. The Padres attempted to add some offensive punch to the lineup a season ago but scoring still was second fiddle to their pitching. The work on the mound has been solid but hasn’t been able to carry the Padres to the postseason and you have to wonder if playing half their games at Petco is just a disadvantage that can’t be overcome. Left hander Drew Pomeranz gets the ball in the night cap of the Padres DH versus Chicago. Pomeranz comes off a 2-0 win against the Mets with a one hitter over five scoreless frames.

The Chicago Cubs have spent years without making the postseason until snagging a National League Wild Card in 2016. The Cubs have spent years mired at or near the bottom of the NL Central and have trade most of their talent away through the years but the Cubbies now possess a pitching staff that can be as stingy anybody and an offense that score runs consistently and in bunches. Chicago is also capable of winning when the bats are quiet or if the pitching struggles although the team needs to continue winning over the long haul which hasn’t happened in years. The Chicago Cubs are scheduled to send veteran John Lackey to the bump in game two of their DH versus the Padres. Lackey was at his best last time out in an 8-6 win versus the Nationals with two runs scored on six hits while whiffing eleven in seven innings.
The under is 9-2 in the Padres last 11 road games and San Diego are 2-7 in their last 9 road games while the under is 7-3 in their last 10 overall. The over is 11-3-2 in the Cubs last 16 overall and is 11-3-2 in their last 16 on grass while Chicago are 43-15 in their last 58 overall. The over is 5-2-1 in the last 8 meetings. My worry here is Lackey who needs support to win in my view…
