Coming up Wednesday evening, we’ve got MLB action headed our way between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
This will be game three of a four-game set. On Monday in the opener, the Yankees struck first on a 6-3 victory. On Tuesday, New York won again, scoring three times in the third and three times in the eighth on the way to a 10-7 result.
USA TODAY Sports
For Wednesday’s game, the Royals will be rolling out right-hander Yordano Ventura. Thus far in the season, Ventura has made six starts with a 4.65 ERA, a 1.58 WHIP and a 2-2 record over 31 innings pitched. It’s been a rough last couple of weeks for Ventura, as he was shelled on Friday for five runs on six hits in four innings against the Indians.
At the plate, the Royals have had a few troubles scoring runs this season. Eric Hosmer leads the way with six homers, 16 RBI and 16 runs. Hosmer came up empty on Tuesday, though. Alcides Escobar has put up 35 hits with 10 runs. Mike Moustakas has been the power man with seven homers and 13 RBI in 2016, but Moustakas is currently on the DL with a thumb injury.
Over on the Yankees side, we’ll be seeing right-hander Michael Pineda on the mound for Wednesday’s game. In his six starts, 33 innings and 1-3 record this year, Pineda has logged a 5.73 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. Back on Friday in a no-decision against the Red Sox, Pineda got through six innings of two-run ball.
The veteran Yankees batting order hasn’t quite been consistent with run-scoring, either. Starlin Castro has had an overall good season with 33 hits and 12 RBI. Carlos Beltran has slapped six homers with 14 RBI and 15 runs. Mark Teixeira hasn’t quite been able to get going with his .202 BA, but he does have 14 runs and 11 RBI. Teixeira sat Tuesday with neck spasms.
The Royals are 5-1 in Ventura’s last six game three starts, and 9-2 in Ventura’s last 11 Wednesday starts.
As for the Yankees, they’re 1-4 in Pineda’s last five starts, and 0-5 in Pineda’s last five starts against a team with a losing record.
I’ll give a slight edge to New York here, but I’m not thrilled about either pitcher’s chances. For that reason, the over seems like a decent play.
