We’ve got one more game in the weekend series between the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins, coming up Sunday evening from Marlins Park.
This is the third matchup of the set. In Friday’s opener, the Nationals secured a 4-1 victory for their third win in a row overall. On Saturday, the Marlins got a little revenge by eking out a 3-2 victory.
USA TODAY Sports
The Nationals will be turning to right-hander Max Scherzer in Sunday’s game. In his nine starts and 4-3 record this season, Scherzer has logged a 4.01 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 58.1 innings. On Tuesday against the Mets, Scherzer struck out 10 on two runs in 6.1 innings, but still took the loss.
The Washington batting order is loaded with talent. Daniel Murphy has 62 hits with 24 runs and 27 RBI. Anthony Rendon is hitting well on 42 hits and 29 runs. Bryce Harper holds a team-high 11 homers with 29 RBI and 27 runs of his own. Harper bagged two hits and a run on Saturday.
Over on the Marlins’ side, we’ll be seeing left-hander Adam Conley. Across eight starts and a 3-2 record, Conley has accumulated a 3.40 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP in 42.1 innings. On Monday against the Phillies in a win, Conley logged six innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts.
The Miami order is pretty well-stocked with hitters, too. Martin Prado holds 54 hits with 12 runs and 13 RBI. Christian Yelich has 47 hits with 24 runs and 20 RBI. Yelich had some back issues (spasms) and didn’t play Saturday. Giancarlo Stanton leads the team on 11 homers with 25 RBI and 20 runs, but is hitting just .214 on the year.
The Nationals are 5-2 in Scherzer’s last seven Sunday starts, and 6-0 in their last six road games against a left-handed starter.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are 5-2 in Conley’s last seven starts in game three of a series, and 4-1 in Conley’s last five starts overall.
This game should be a pretty close one if everything goes according to plan. I’ll give a slight edge to the Marlins here, but wouldn’t be surprised to see the under come in.
