Monday evening in the MLB, the New York Mets will be traveling to Nationals Park to face off against the Washington Nationals in their series opener.
The Mets are coming off a weekend set against the Brewers. New York won the first two games by a combined three runs, and on Sunday in the finale, the Mets got a 3-1 victory despite getting out-hit 8-6.
As for the Nationals, they tangled with the Marlins over the weekend. The two teams split the first pair of games, and in Sunday’s rubber match, Washington got a dominant 8-2 victory.

The Mets will be starting fan favorite Bartolo Colon in Monday’s game. Over his nine games this season (eight starts), Colon has compiled a 3.75 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP in 48 innings. On Wednesday in a loss, Colon gave up three earned in just 4.2 innings of work.
The New York batting order is pretty top-heavy but well-rounded. Asdrubal Cabrera leads the way on 44 hits with 13 runs. Yoenis Cespedes has contributed 42 hits with 28 runs, 14 homers and 35 RBI. Neil Walker is also hitting pretty well with 38 hits, 10 homers and 20 RBI. Cabrera, Cespedes and Walker combined to go 3-for-11 with two RBI and a run on Sunday.
For Monday’s start, the Nationals will be turning to left-hander Gio Gonzalez. In his eight starts and 3-1 record this season, Gonzalez has posted a 1.86 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 48.1 innings. On Wednesday in his last start, Gonzalez managed 6.1 innings of one-run ball against the Mets for another victory.
It’s not hard to find stars in the Nationals’ lineup. Daniel Murphy has been smoking this year with 63 hits, 25 runs and 28 RBI. Anthony Rendon has 44 hits with 30 runs. Rendon bagged two hits, three RBI and a run on Sunday. Bryce Harper has contributed a team-high 11 homers with 30 RBI and 28 runs of his own.
The Mets are 21-5 in their last 26 Monday games, and 8-0 in Colon’s last eight Monday starts.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 6-1 in their last seven Monday games and 5-2 in their last seven game ones of a series.
Colon has been a little choppy this season, so I like the Nationals in this game. It should be a pretty close and interesting series overall, however.
