Wednesday afternoon, one of the MLB’s most storied rivalries will wrap up another installment as the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals clash at Busch Stadium.
This will be the third game of the series this week. On Monday in the opener, the Cardinals squeaked by with a 4-3 win. On Tuesday, the Cubs destroyed St. Louis 12-3.

The Cubs will be whipping out big gun Jake Arrieta in the starting role on Wednesday. Over his nine starts this season, Arrieta has been fantastic on a 1.29 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP for an 8-0 record in 63 total innings. On Friday when we last saw him, Arrieta came up with seven innings of one-run ball on four hits against the Giants.
Everyone’s talking about the Cubs offense this year. Ben Zobrist leads the way on 51 hits with 33 runs and 29 RBI. Dexter Fowler is also playing well on 52 hits with 31 runs and 22 RBI. Anthony Rizzo has been the power man on 39 hits with 11 homers, 35 RBI and 29 runs. Rizzo went just 1-for-4 with a run on Tuesday, pushing his BA to .239 on the year.
Over on the Cardinals’ side, we’ll be getting another look at right-hander Carlos Martinez on Wednesday. It’s been an up-and-down road this year for Martinez, who has made eight starts with a 4-4 record, a 3.56 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 48 innings. On Friday, Martinez gave up four runs in five innings against the Diamondbacks.
St. Louis has a pretty capable batting order that features a nice blend of vets and newcomers. Stephen Piscotty has 57 hits with 31 runs and 25 RBI. Aging backstop Yadier Molina still has some gas in the tank with 50 hits and 29 runs on a .345 BA. Matt Carpenter leads the team with nine homers and has 32 RBI with 29 runs. Molina, Piscoty and Carpenter combined to go 0-for-6 on Tuesday.
The Cubs are 8-0 in Arrieta’s last eight game threes of a series, and 5-0 in Arrieta’s last five Wednesday starts.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are 10-3 in their last 13 game threes of a series, and 20-7 in their last 27 Wednesday games.
There’s no way I can pick against Arrieta here. The Cubs should be able to finish things off with a victory.
