The St. Louis Cardinals head the nation’s capitol to open a series with the Washington Nationals.

The St. Louis Cardinals are chasing both the Cubs and Pirates in the NL Central as their offense and pitching hasn’t been on the same page often enough. Something seems amiss with the Cardinals as they fell to the visiting Cubs 9-8 on Wednesday despite being one of the few teams to actually do some damage against Jake Arrieta. Cards starter Carlos Martinez was charged with six runs on six hits and three free passes over five frames to fall to 4-5 before Seung-Hwan Oh allowed three runs in an inning. The Redbirds racked up 12 hits and a pair of walks with Matt Holliday, Matt  Adams and Randal Grichuk slamming homers. The Cardinals hand the ball to Mike Leake for his second match up with Washington in 2016. Leake has recovered from a slow start to the season by going 3-0 with a 0.86 WHIP  and 0.86 ERA over his last three outings.

Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals - 5/26/16 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Nationals have loads of talent but producing consistently can be a problem. It was an issue Wednesday in a 2-0 loss to the visiting Mets Wednesday although New York hurler Steven Matz had something to do with that. In the process astrong effort by Nationals starter Tanner Roark went for naught with the right hander allowing both runs (one earned) on five hits and a pair of free passes through seven innings that dropped his record to 3-4. The Nats totaled six hits and walked once with Daniel Murphy being the biggest threat with a pair of singles.Washington sends out Joe Ross to oppose the Cardinals for the second time in 2016. After beginning the season 3-0, Ross has dropped four straight with 15 runs scored on 28 hits and eight walks over 24 frames.

The over is 12-4 in the Cardinals last 16 road games and St. Louis are 23-8 in their last 31 Thursday games while going  11-5 in their last 16 road games. The over is 35-17-6 in Washington’s last 58 home games. The Cardinals are 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Washington. I don’t even think I’d bet this but…
