The Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs will be wrapping up their weekend series at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
This will be the third game of the set. In Friday’s opener, the Cubs secured a 6-2 win. On Saturday, the Cubs scored three runs in the first two innings on the way to a 4-1 victory.
USA TODAY Sports
For Sunday’s game, the Phillies will be rolling with right-hander Vincent Velasquez. In his nine starts and 5-1 record this year, Velasquez has put up a 2.75 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 52.1 innings. On Monday in a loss to the Tigers, Velasquez put up four innings with three runs on nine hits.
The Phillies offense has struggled this year, but there are a few key hitters in the bunch. Odubel Herrera has 57 hits with 28 runs and 17 RBI. Maikel Franco has eigth homers with 28 RBI and 46 hits. Franco came up empty on Saturday. Freddy Galvis has 45 hits with 19 runs and 17 RBI thus far. Galvis bagged two hits in Saturday’s game.
The Cubs will be giving us another look at right-hander John Lackey in Sunday’s game. In nine starts and a 4-2 record this year, Lackey holds a 3.38 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP in 61.1 innings. In a no-decision against the Cardinals on Monday, Lackey struck out nine with three runs in seven innings of work.
Throw a dart at the Chicago lineup card and you’re likely to hit a budding superstar. Ben Zobrist has been great on 58 hits with 35 runs and 32 RBI. Dexter Fowler is right there as well on 55 hits with 33 runs and 24 RBI. Fowler nailed a solo homer on Saturday. Kris Bryant has come on strong lately to 52 hits, 35 runs, 11 homers and 36 RBI.
The Phillies are 5-1 in their last six game threes of a series and 7-2 in their last nine Sunday games.
As for the Cubs, they’re 1-4 in their last five game threes of a series, but 6-0 in their last five against the National League East.
I don’t think I’ve picked against the Cubs yet this year, and it’s mostly been a safe bet. Chicago should close out the series with another win.
