Coming up Tuesday from Safeco Field, the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners will be picking up their early-week series.
In Monday’s opener, the Mariners scored four times in the sixth and five more in the eighth on the way to a 9-3 win.
USA TODAY Sports
For Tuesday’s game, the Padres will be whipping out right-hander James Shields. Over his 10 starts and 2-6 record this season, Shields has posted a 3.06 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP in 64.2 innings. In his most recent appearance, Shields posted two earned on five hits in six innings against the Giants.
The San Diego offense leaves a little to be desired, but there are some bright spots here. Jon Jay has 54 hits with 21 runs to his credit. Wil Myers has seven homers, 22 RBI, 52 hits and 27 runs. Matt Kemp leads the way on 12 homers and 32 RBI with 47 hits and 24 runs. Jay, Myers and Kemp combined for four hits and a run on Monday.
The Mariners will be countering with right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma on Tuesday. Over 10 starts and a 3-4 record this season, Iwakuma has produced a 4.33 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP in 62.1 innings. In seven innings against the A’s in his last appearance, Iwakuma gave up three runs in a win.
It’s pretty easy to find the stars on the top-heavy Seattle roster. Robinson Cano has 60 hits with 34 runs and 44 RBI with 15 homers this year. Nelson Cruz has 52 hits with 26 runs and 33 RBI. Cruz bagged two hits with a run and an RBI on Monday. Kyle Seager has nine homers with 48 hits and 28 runs so far. Seager managed a homer in Monday’s game.
The Padres are 5-16 in their last 21 Tuesday games, and 1-4 in their last five game twos of a series.
As for the Mariners, they’re 19-7 in their last 26 Tuesday games, and 4-0 in Iwakuma’s last four Tuesday starts.
I’m not thrilled with Iwakuma this year, but he should provide enough cushion for the Mariners offense to pick up a win here.
