In MLB action on Monday, the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles will be kicking off their early-week series from Oriole Park.
The Royals just finished up a four-game series against the Indians. Kansas City dropped the first three games by a combined 18-6 score. On Sunday, the Royals were crushed 7-0, managing just three hits in the game.
Meanwhile, the Orioles are coming off a set against the Yankees. Baltimore and New York split the first two games, and in the Sunday finale, the Orioles squeezed out a rain-delayed 3-1 win, scoring all their runs in the eighth inning.
USA TODAY Sports
Southpaw Danny Duffy will be taking the mound for the Monday start for the Royals. In his 20 games (four starts) and 1-0 record this year, Duffy has tallied a 3.44 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP in 36.2 total innings. On Wednesday, Duffy bagged a quality start against the Rays with three runs on seven hits in six innings.
The Kansas City batting order features a nice group of players on the top end. Eric Hosmer heads the charge with 68 hits, 30 runs and 35 RBI with 10 homers. Lorenzo Cain is right there as well on 30 runs, 62 hits and 34 RBI. Alcides Escobar has hit safely 62 times with 21 runs and 15 RBI. Hosmer and Escobar bagged two of KC’s three hits in Sunday’s game.
The Orioles will be spot-starting right-hander Mike Wright in Monday's game. In his 10 games (nine starts) and 2-3 record this year, Wright has amassed a 5.88 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP over 49 total innings. Wright got bumped out of the starting rotation last week and was going to work out of the bullpen, but the O's need a starter here.
The Baltimore lineup is pretty impressive if you check out the stats. Manny Machado has been great on 68 hits with 39 runs, 14 homers and 35 RBI. Mark Trumbo leads the team on 18 homers with 43 RBI, 63 hits and 35 runs. Jonathan Schoop has 52 hits to his credit with 22 runs and 31 RBI. Machado, Trumbo and Schoop combined to go 0-for-9 with a run on Sunday.
The Royals are 6-1 in their last seven game ones of a series, and 3-8 in their last 11 Monday games. Kansas City is also 12-4 in Duffy’s last 16 starts in game one of a series, and 3-7 in Duffy’s last 10 starts versus the American League East.
As for the Orioles, they’re 0-5 in their last five home games against a left-handed starter, and 1-5 in their last six games overall against a left-handed starter. Baltimore is also 7-2 in their last nine against the American League Central, and 26-11 in their last 37 home games.
With Duffy on the mound, I think the Royals have a good shot at getting out front early. Give me KC for the opening victory, despite their recent struggles.
