Early Monday evening in MLB action from Yankee Stadium, we’ve got game one of this week’s series between the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees.
The Angels are fresh off a weekend set against the Pirates. Los Angeles dominated Friday’s game, then lost an 8-7 heartbreaker on Saturday. In the Sunday finale, the Angels escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to eke out a 5-4 win.
Meanwhile, the Yankees just finished up against the Orioles. New York and Baltimore split the first two games with only three combined runs separating them. In Sunday’s game, the Yankees had a 1-0 lead late but lost it in the eighth and fell 3-1.

For Monday’s matchup, the Angels are set to roll out RHP Matt Shoemaker for the start. Over his 10 starts and 3-6 record this year, Shoemaker holds a 5.50 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP in 52.1 innings. On Wednesday, Shoemaker held the Tigers to two runs in seven innings, but still took the loss.
The high-powered and high-paid Angels batting order has had its share of ups and downs this year. Yunel Escobar has posted 65 hits with 25 runs and 17 RBI. Mike Trout is playing well on 64 hits with 39 runs, 12 homers and a team-high 41 RBI. Kole Kalhoun is getting in on the action with 63 hits, 37 runs and 29 RBI. Kalhoun had two hits and a run on Sunday.
On Monday, the Yankees will be giving the start to right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. In his 11 starts and 3-1 record this year, Tanaka has logged a 2.78 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP across 71.1 innings. On Friday in his most recent start, Tanaka managed just two hits in seven shutout innings en route to a 4-1 win against the Rays.
The veteran New York lineup features a handful of key players. Carlos Beltran heads the charge on a team-high 13 homers with 53 hits, 29 runs and 33 RBI. Starlin Castro has been solid overall with 52 hits, 23 RBI and 16 runs. Castro came up empty 0-for-4 on Sunday, though. Jacoby Ellsbury has 50 hits with 21 runs and 18 RBI so far.
The Angels are 4-0 in their last four game ones of a series, and 6-1 in their last seven Monday games. Los Angeles is also 1-5 in their last six road games versus a team with a losing record, and 1-8 in their last nine against the American League East.
As for the Yankees, they’re 4-0 in their last four against the American League West, and 9-3 in their last 12 against a team with a losing record. New York is also 8-3 in their last 11 games on grass and 40-17 in their last 57 home games following a road trip of a week or more.
Shoemaker has been cruising on the mound lately, so I’ve got to give the Angels the winning edge here--as long as the offense can provide a bit of a cushion. That said, Tanaka has been great as well, so the under makes sense.
