The Pittsburgh Pirates look to shake off a tough loss at home against the Mets last night as they take to the road to face off with the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.
The Pirates spoiled the debut of Jameson Taillon last night as they gave up three runs after the seventh inning and ultimately dropped a 6-5 final to the Mets and now they take to the road to face off against the Rockies at Coors Field in a place teams love to play in at the plate. Pittsburgh is considered one of the best teams in baseball and have the roster to challenge the Cubs for the National League Central title but at this rate they are likely to set their focus on the wild card spots as the Cubs are running away with it right now and unless the Pirates can go on a nice run and the Cubs somehow falter that might be what happens. Pittsburgh will send Jeff Locke ot the mound in this one as he will face off against Chad Betts who is 4-5 with a 5.58 ERA.

The Rockies return home after a series in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and heading into action last night they were 26-32 on the year and battling in the middle of the pack in the National League West. The Rockies have to contend with the Giants and Dodgers in the division and while they caught a break with the way the Diamondbacks have been playing this season they know they have to step up their game if they’re going to challenge one of the two top dogs if they’re going to make the playoffs. The Rockies offense is loaded with power and they will look to get at Locke early and often and perhaps chase the Pirates starter and get to the bullpen by the middle of the ball game.
The Pirates are 6-1 in their last seven series openers, 1-5 in their last six road games, and 4-0 in Locke’s last four starts, while the Rockies are 3-8 in their last 11, 8-23 in their last 31 against the NL Central, and 1-5 in their last six home games. Pittsburgh took one on the chin last night but I think they respond here on the road as the offense wakes up at the hitter friendly Coors Field.
