Friday evening at Yankee Stadium, we’ve got series-opening MLB action coming between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees.
The Tigers are coming off an early-week set against the Blue Jays. Detroit took the first two games by a combined 14-2 score, but dropped the finale 7-2.
As for the Yankees, they just finished up against the Angels. New York took the first three games 5-2, 6-3 and 12-6, and then on Thursday the Yankees scored five runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 6-3 win and the sweep.

For Friday’s game, the Tigers will be turning to right-hander Mike Pelfrey in the start. Over his 11 games and 1-5 record this year, Pelfrey has put up a 4.76 ERA with a 1.72 WHIP across 58.2 innings. On Saturday, Pelfrey logged two earned in six innings against the White Sox for a victory.
The Detroit batting order is pretty top-heavy but a capable crew overall. Ian Kinsler leads the team on 74 hits with 50 runs and 35 RBI. Victor Martinez isn’t far behind with his 70 hits, 24 runs and 34 RBI. Miguel Cabrera has a team-high 12 homers (tie) alongside 68 hits with 32 runs and 36 RBI.
Over on the Yankees’ side, we’ll be getting another look at lefty CC Sabathia. In his nine starts and 3-4 mark this year, Sabathia has posted a 2.58 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP in 52.1 total innings. When we last saw him on Sunday, Sabathia put up five innings against the Orioles, walking six but allowing just two hits in a no-decision.
It’s pretty easy to pick out the stars on the New York batting order. Carlos Beltran holds a team-high 16 homers with 43 RBI, 32 runs and 60 total hits. Starlin Castro has had a few issues as of late, but still holds 58 hits with 19 runs and 25 RBI. Castro went 1-for-4 on Thursday. Jacoby Ellsbury has 26 runs, 56 hits and 19 RBI.
The Tigers are 4-0 in their last four games versus a left-handed starter, and 5-1 in their last six overall. Detroit is also 6-13 in their last 19 Friday games, and 1-4 in their last five following an off day.
Meanwhile, the Yankees are 4-1 in their last five against the American League Central, and 5-2 in their last seven game ones of a series. New York is also 2-5 in Sabathia’s last seven home starts and 0-4 in Sabathia’s last four starts with four days’ rest.
I’m not too fond of either offense here, so the under seems a good play. I’ll give a slight winning edge to the Yankees and Sabathia as well.
