The Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals meet up in DC on Monday night in a battle of two of the league’s best teams and what could be an NLCS preview.
The Cubs are coming off a shellacking of the last place Atlanta Braves that gave Jon Lester another victory as they hung 13 runs on the home team and notched their 43rd victory of the season in the process. The task gets much tougher on Monday though as they head into Nationals Park to face off against Max Scherzer and while the Cubs have had success against him this season the righty will be out for vengeance as he is starting to settle in and gives the Nats perhaps the best 1-2 punch in the majors with he and Stephen Strasburg. Chicago has the best team ERA and a lot of that has to do with the success of guys like Kyle Hendricks who will get the call tonight and if he can continue his impressive season it could be enough to get the Cubs the win in this one.

The Nationals meanwhile are coming off a win of their own yesterday and now get the Cubs at home in what could be a statement series for the NL East leaders who are considered a front runner but perhaps not the top end team in the National League right now. Washington is loaded across the board and have a very solid team top to bottom but do look like they are a bit behind the MLB leaders from the North side of Chicago and while a lot can happen across the course of a season this could be a determining factor for home field advantage in the playoffs.
The Cubs are 10-2 in their last 12 against the NL East, 54-23 in their last 77 overall, and 36-17 in their last 53 road games while the Nats are 5-1 in their last six against a righty, 3-8 in their last 11 against the NL Central and 7-2 in their last nine Monday games. This is going to be an exciting series and while the Nats may have the edge on the mound I don’t think it is as big as people think and with the better lineup I give the nods to the Cubs who have shown up big all season.
