Tuesday evening at historic Fenway Park, the Baltimore Orioles and the Boston Red Sox will be kicking off their MLB mid-week series.
The Orioles just finished up a four-game set with the Blue Jays. Baltimore won Thursday’s game, but dropped the three games over the weekend.
As for the Red Sox, they took on the Twins in their most recent series. Boston won the first two games by a combined 23-5 score, but lost the finale 7-4.

For Tuesday’s opener, the Orioles will be turning to right-hander Chris Tillman. In his 13 starts this year with an 8-1 record, Tillman has produced a 3.01 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP in 77.2 innings. On Wednesday when we last saw him, Tillman rocked the Royals for 7.1 shutout innings with nine strikeouts and no walks.
The Orioles have a truckload of talent in their batting order. Manny Machado has burst out of the gate this year on 77 hits with 47 runs, 16 homers and 39 RBI. Mark Trumbo leads the team on 20 homers with 49 RBI, 70 hits and 38 runs. Chris Davis has 16 homers and 39 RBI but is still sporting a tepid .228 BA thus far.
On the Red Sox’ side, we’ll be seeing lefty David Price in the starting role Tuesday. Over 13 games and a 7-3 record this year, Price has produced a 4.63 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP in 83.2 innings of work. Price took a tough-luck loss on Wednesday against the Giants, giving up two runs on three hits in eight innings.
The Boston hitters are no slouches at the plate either. Xander Bogaerts has been unbelievable on a whopping 94 hits with 51 runs and 44 RBI. Mookie Betts has 79 hits with 14 homers and 47 RBI alongside 58 runs. David Ortiz refuses to age, and has managed 71 hits with 29 runs, a team-high 16 homers and 55 RBI this season.
The Orioles are 4-1 in their last five game ones of a series, and 3-8 in their last 11 road games. Baltimore is also 2-5 in Tillman’s last seven Tuesday starts, but 6-0 in Tillman’s last six starts against the American League East.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are 4-1 in their last five Tuesday games, and 4-1 in their last five games versus a right-handed starter. Boston is also 14-5 in their last 19 home games and 1-4 in their last five against the American League East.
This should be a great--and very tight--series, and a fun one to watch. I’ll give Tillman and the Orioles a very slight advantage in the opener, however.
