Coming up in MLB action on Wednesday, we’ve got the series finale between the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals over at Nationals Park.
This will be the third game of the set. In Monday’s opener, the Nationals secured a 4-1 victory. On Tuesday, the Cubs eked out a 4-3 victory to even the series.
USA TODAY Sports
For Wednesday’s game, the Cubs will be bringing out right-hander Jason Hammel. In his 12 starts and 7-2 record this year, Hammel has produced a nice 2.36 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP in 68.2 innings. On Friday, Hammel suffered a loss to the Braves with three runs on eight hits in 5.2 frames.
Chicago is very strong at the plate this year as well. Kris Bryant heads the charge on 16 homers, 47 runs, 45 RBI and 67 hits. Dexter Fowler isn’t far back with 39 runs, 68 hits and 28 RBI. Anthony Rizzo has been solid thus far with his 58 hits, 38 runs, 14 homers and 47 RBI. Rizzo came up empty 0-for-4 on Tuesday, though.
Over on the Nationals’ side, we’ll be seeing right-hander Stephen Strasburg take the mound. In his 13 starts and 10-0 record this year, Strasburg has put up a 3.03 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP in 86 innings. On Friday in a win over the Phillies, Strasburg was solid with 10 strikeouts and four earned in seven innings.
The Washington batting order doesn’t get as much press as some of the other teams, but they’ve definitely got talent. Daniel Murphy is way ahead with 87 hits, 38 runs and 42 RBI. Anthony Rendon is also playing well on 62 hits, 42 runs and 23 RBI.
Wilson Ramos has 62 hits so far with 26 runs and 36 RBI. Bryce Harper has a team-high 13 homers with 38 RBI, 50 hits and 38 runs.
The Cubs are 4-0 in their last four Wednesday games, and 5-1 in their last six game threes of a series. Chicago is also 9-2 in Hammel’s last 11 starts, and 9-4 in Hammel’s last 13 starts against the National League East.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 77-36 in their last 113 Wednesday games, and 4-0 in Strasburg’s last four starts in game three of a series. Washington is also 19-7 in Strasburg’s last 26 home starts and 13-6 in Strasburg’s last 19 Wednesday starts.
This matchup is a tough call, but with the great starting pitchers I’ll go with the under. I’ll also give a very slight winning edge to the home-crowd Nationals.
