In MLB action from Oriole Park on Sunday, we’ve got the series finale between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles.
This will be the fourth game of the set. In Friday’s opener, the Orioles bagged a 6-3 victory. Saturday featured a doubleheader, and Baltimore won game one 5-0. In the late game, the Orioles continued the streak with an 8-6 victory.

For Sunday’s matchup, we’ll be seeing left-hander Drew Smyly on the mound for the Rays. In his 14 starts and 2-7 record this year, Smyly has contributed a 4.78 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP in 84.2 innings of work. On Monday against the Indians, Smyly put up four runs in seven innings for a no-decision.
Tampa Bay has some intriguing names atop their roster. Evan Longoria has 77 hits to lead the way, with 41 runs, 18 homers and 43 RBI. Steve Pearce holds 56 hits with 23 runs, nine homers and 25 RBI. Steven Souza has put up 54 hits with 26 runs, 10 homers and 25 RBI of his own. Pierce and Souza have been fighting injury lately.
On Sunday, the Orioles will be starting right-hander Tyler Wilson. In his 14 appearances (11 starts) this year, Wilson holds a 3-5 record with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in 73 innings. On Tuesday against the Padres, Wilson put up a no-decision with three runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
Baltimore has a plethora of solid hitters on their roster. Manny Machado has logged 91 hits with 52 runs, 18 homers and 43 RBI. Mark Trumbo is sitting on 81 hits with 42 runs, 21 homers and 52 RBI. Jonathan Schoop is also playing well with 78 hits, 38 runs, 12 homers and 42 RBI. Schoop, Machado and Trumbo each snagged a hit in the nightcap on Saturday.
The Rays are 40-19 in their last 59 game fours of a series, and 12-4 in Smyly’s last 16 starts against the American League East. Tampa Bay is also 1-4 in Smyly’s last five starts on grass, and 1-4 in Smyly’s last five starts against a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Orioles are 4-13 in their last 17 game fours of a series, and 5-2 in their last seven games against a left-handed starter. Baltimore is also 14-5 in their last 19 games on grass and 4-1 in their last five against the American League East.
I’m not too jazzed about Smyly this year, so I’ll go with the Orioles to get a victory in the finale.
