The Chicago Cubs look to close out the weekend with a win at the Miami Marlins.
The Chicago Cubs have gone through their first slow period of the season and we’ll see how they handle it. The Cubs didn’t handle it well Saturday in a 9-6 defeat at Miami that saddled the team with losses in five of six. Cubbies starter John Lackey was tagged for seven runs on seven hits and three BB over 4.1 frames to fall to 7-4. Chicago totaled eight hits and walked eight times with Addison Russell going deep and driving in three with two runs while Miguel Montero went solo. The Cubs send Jason Hammel to the hill to oppose the Marlins for the first time this year. Hammel comes off of a 4-3 loss to St. Louis with all four runs scored on six hits including two homers over 5.2 innings.

The Miami Marlins have slowly climbed in to second in the National League East and if they want to stay there losing streaks of any length have to be avoided. The Marlins victory versus the powerhouse Cubs was their third win in four contests and was a reminder to the rest of the East that this team isn’t going away. Fish starter Paul Clemens improved to 1-0 with four runs plated on four hits and five bases on balls through five innings. Miami logged ten hits and walked three times with Justin Bour going 2-4 with a homer and three RBI’s while Giancarlo Stanton went 2-3 with a pair of runs and three more RBI’s. Miami hands the ball to Jose Fernandez for his first career meeting against the Cubs on Sunday. Fernandez did not get a decision in a 3-2 loss to the Braves with a one hit shutout over seven frames.
The under is 34-16-4 in the Cubs last 54 Sunday games and Chicago are 34-16 in their last 50 road games while going 60-29 in their last 89 overall. The under is 8-0 in Fernandez’s last 8 on grass and Miami are 27-3 in Fernandez’s last 30 home starts while going 36-15 in Fernandez’s last 51 starts. The Cubs are too good to keep losing but Fernandez is one of the best…
