On Monday at Great American Ball Park, the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds will be kicking off their early-week series.
The Cubs are fresh off a series against the Marlins this weekend. Chicago lost the Thursday and Saturday games, but won on Friday 5-4. In the Sunday finale, the Cubs lost 6-1.
As for the Reds, they just finished up against the Padres. Cincinnati dropped the first three games, and on Sunday the Reds prevented the sweep with a 3-0 win.

For Monday’s game, the Cubs will be bringing out right-hander Jake Arrieta for the start. In his 15 starts and 11-2 record this year, Arrieta has put together a 1.74 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP in 98 innings. On Wednesday in a loss to the Cardinals, Arrieta put up two runs (one earned) in five innings on four hits.
The Chicago batting order is pretty lethal this year overall. Kris Bryant has 74 hits with 55 runs, 18 homers and 51 RBI. Ben Zobrist has 74 hits with 49 runs, nine homers and 41 RBI. Dexter Fowler is sitting on 69 hits with 41 runs, 28 RBI and seven homers this year. Fowler is currently posted up on the DL, however.
Over on the Reds side, we’ll be seeing RHP Dan Straily take the mound. Over his 16 games (13 starts) and 4-4 record this year, Straily has a 3.83 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP in 84.2 innings. In his last outing, Straily went six innings with three hits and four earned against the Rangers for a loss.
There are a few diamonds in the proverbial rough of the Reds’ order. Jay Bruce has hit 74 times with 44 runs, 17 homers and 58 RBI. Bruce bagged a solo homer on Sunday. Zack Cozart has 69 hits with 41 runs, 11 homers and 31 RBI. Adam Duvall has a team-high 21 homers with 51 RBI, 63 hits and 41 runs.
The Cubs are 10-3 in their last 13 Monday games, and 34-13 in their last 47 game ones of a series. Chicago is also 24-3 in Arrieta’s last 27 road starts, and 4-1 in Arrieta’s last ive Monday starts.
Meanwhile, the Reds are 7-1 in their last eight game ones of a series, and 4-9 in their last 13 Monday games. Cincinnati is also 5-1 in Straily’s last six home starts, and 4-1 in Straily’s last five home starts against a team with a winning record.
If the Cubs can’t beat the Reds right now, they’re in trouble. With Arrieta on the mound, Chicago should take this one handily.
