The Detroit Tigers look for a win at the Tampa Bay Rays to stay in the postseason conversation.
The Detroit Tigers have to win games and hope that the Indians go cold to catch them in the American League Central. The Tigers erased a 7-2 deficit with an eight run 9th to win 10-7 at Tropicana Field on Thursday. Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann gave up five runs (four earned) over six frames with Anibal Sanchez giving up two more. Detroit totaled eleven hits with Cameron Maybin going 3-4 with four RBI’s and a run while Ian Kinsler drove in a pair and scored. Michael Fulmer is slated to match up against the Rays for the second time this season. Fulmer did not get a decision in a 5-1 win versus Seattle with the lone run scored on three hits over 4.1 innings.

The Tampa Bay Rays have to get hot soon or they will be relegated to the role of spoiler. The Rays saw their two game winning streak end with a pathetic effort from the pen. TB starter Jake Odorizzi allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three BB through five innings. Ryan Garton came in to the 9th and was downright awful with four runs scored without recording an out. Erasmo Ramirez gave up four more runs but at least he got an out. Tampa racked up 14 hits and walked twice with Nick Franklin knocking in three while Logan Forsyth, Hank Conger and Brandon Guyer drove in runs and scored. Drew Smyly toes the rubber against the Tigers for the second time on the year. Smyly struggled last time out in a 12-5 loss at Baltimore with eight runs given up on ten hits including three homers in five frames.
Detroit are 2-6 in their last 8 Friday games and are 8-1 in Fulmer’s last 9 starts. Tampa Bay are 2-12 in their last 14 overall and are 4-10 in their last 14 Friday games while the over is 8-1-1 in Smyly’s last 10 starts overall. I couldn’t watch the 9th Thursday as I bet the Rays…going Tigers here…
