Right-hander Jake Arrieta will take the mound for the Cubs on Saturday. Over 16 starts this year, Arrieta has logged a 12-2 record, a 2.10 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 103 innings. On Monday, Arrieta wasn’t quite as sharp as usual with five earned on four hits in five innings.
The Chicago batting order is one of the most capable in the league. Kris Bryant leads the way on 84 hits with 63 runs, 23 homers and 61 RBI. Bryant managed a solo homer in Friday’s game. Ben Zobrist has put up 81 hits with 54 runs, 10 homers and 42 RBI. Anthony Rizzo isn’t far behind with 76 hits, 46 runs, 19 homers and 58 RBI. Zobrist and Rizzo combined to go 0-for-6 on Friday.
Veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon will make the start for the Mets on Saturday. In 16 games (15 starts) this year with a 6-4 record, Colon has secured a 2.86 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP in 88 innings. On Sunday in a loss to the Braves, Colon went seven innings with six hits and one earned run.
New York features a few noteworthy batters in their lineup also. Yoenis Cespedes has a team-high 11 homers with 47 RBI, 77 hits and 43 runs. Cespedes put up a solo homer on Friday. Asdrubal Cabrera has put up 76 hits, 32 runs and 27 RBI. Cespedes managed two homers in Friday’s game. Neil Walker has hit 68 times with 32 runs, 14 homers and 32 RBI thus far.
The Cubs are 4-1 in their last five Saturday games, and 5-0 in Arrieta’s last five Saturday starts. Chicago is also 25-3 in Arrieta’s last 28 road starts, and 42-12 in Arrieta’s last 54 starts overall.
As for the Mets, they’re 21-6 in their last 27 against the National League Central and 2-4 in their last six overall. New York is also 4-1 in Colon’s last five starts, and 4-10 in Colon’s last 14 starts with five days’ rest.
I can’t pick against Arrieta here, so I’ll take the Cubs--even though Colon should keep things relatively close on the other side.
