The Pittsburgh Pirates travel to Busch Stadium to take the field with the St. Louis Cardinals in Monday action.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to overtake the Cardinals for second in the National League Central and are enjoying a little spurt. The Pirates have won four straight after knocking off Oakland 6-3 Sunday behind solid offense and relief pitching. Buccos starter Francisco Liriano allowed all three runs on six hits over five frames with four relievers putting up zeros. Pittsburgh pounded out eleven hits and walked five times with David Freese smacking a two run homer while Gregory Polanco knocked in two and Jordy Mercer scored twice. The Pirates are sending Jonathan Niese to the mound to face the Cardinals for the 4th time this year. On the season, Niese has gone 6-6 in 16 starts with a 1.53 WHIP and 5.07 ERA.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates - 7/4/16 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The St. Louis Cardinals have been inconsistent this season and that’s not a good thing with the Cubs poised to run away with the NL Central. The Cardinals have won three in a row with their pen nearly giving it away before nailing down a 9-8 win versus visiting Milwaukee on Sunday. Cards starter Michael Wacha upped his record to 5-7 with two runs plated through five innings before Trevor Rosenthal threw batting practice…again with two runs scored without recording an out while Seung Hwan Oh finished off another pathetic bullpen effort with three more runs given up, also without recording an out. The Redbirds totaled eleven hits with Aledmys Diaz going deep while Stephen Piscotty homered and drove in four with every starter reaching base. The Cardinals hand the ball to Carlos Martinez Monday who has been their best starter in 2016. Martinez has logged a 7-5 record despite a 1.11 WHIP and a 2.83 ERA in 15 starts.

Pittsburgh are 6-2 in their last 8 overall and are 6-2 in their last 8 games on grass while going  4-10 in their last 14 road games. The under is 8-0-1 in the Cardinals last 9 home games and St. Louis  are 2-7 in their last 9 home games while the over is 8-3-4 in Martinez’s last 15 home starts. The Pirates are 8-21 in the last 29 meetings in St. Louis. I did favor St. Louis but their pen is just awful  at times and they get paid for it…
