The Royals will be rolling out right-hander Ian Kennedy for Friday’s game. In his 17 starts and 6-7 record this year, Kennedy holds a 3.97 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP in 99.2 innings. In his last start against the Blue Jays, Kennedy put up four hits and two runs in six innings for a no-decision.
Kansas City has some intriguing hitters at their disposal. Eric Hosmer has 100 hits with 13 homers and 49 RBI alongside 45 runs. Alcides Escobar is right there with 29 runs, 96 hits, three triples and 23 RBI. Lorenzo Cain has hit 83 times with 39 runs, eight homers and 39 RBI.
Over on the Detroit side, we’ll be getting a dose of Justin Verlander. Over his 18 starts this year, Verlander has tabulated a 4.07 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 117.1 innings. In his last game against the Blue Jays, Verlander put up 5.2 innings with six hits and two runs for a no-decision.
The Tigers have some solid hitters as well. Ian Kinsler heads the charge on 103 hits with 71 runs, 16 homers and 52 RBI. Nick Castellanos has put up 99 hits with 45 runs, 17 homers and 51 RBI. Miguel Cabrera holds 98 hits with 49 runs, 18 homers and 53 RBI.
The Royals are 8-1 in their last nine against the American League Central, and 2-6 in their last eight overall. Kansas City is also 0-5 in Kennedy’s last five road starts, and 2-5 in Kennedy’s last seven starts.
As for the Tigers, they’re 11-4 in their last 15 home games, and 2-5 in their last seven overall. Detroit is also 1-4 in their last five Friday games and 1-8 in their last nine against the American League Central.
I’m not thrilled with much of anything in this game, but I’ll give the Tigers a slight advantage if Verlander can come out strong.
