The Houston Astros visit the west coast on Monday to face the rival Oakland Athletics.
With the Rangers faltering a bit the Houston Astros have their opportunity to make up some ground in the American League West. The Astros kept pace with Texas with an 8-1 win at Seattle for their third victory in four games. Stros starter Collin McHugh picked up the win with six scoreless frames while striking out ten. Houston pounded out eleven hits and walked four times with Jose Altuve going 4-5 with a homer, three RBI’s and two runs while Carlos Gomez smacked a grand slam. The Astros hand the ball to Mike Fiers for the series opener at Oakland on Monday. Fiers did not get a decision in a 9-8 win versus Seattle with four runs allowed on five hits including three homers over 3.1 innings.

The Oakland Athletics have a real shot at reaching .500 if they don’t stumble the first few weeks following the All Star break. The Athletics had won three of four before falling to visiting Toronto 5-3 Sunday with starter Rich Hill getting scratched with a blister on his finger. Sean Manaea gave the A’s five innings with two runs allowed before John Axford gave up a pair of runs in 2/3 of an inning. Oakland managed eight hits with Marcus Semien going solo while Yonder Alonzo cracked a two run double. Kendall Graveman toes the rubber for his second consecutive start against the Astros. Graveman defeated Houston 3-2 with both runs scoring on five hits in eight frames.
Houston are 8-2 in their last 10 road games and the under is 12-4 in their last 16 road games while the Astros are 19-7 in their last 26 overall. The over is 13-6-1 in Oakland’s last 20 overall and is 13-6-1 in their last 20 on grass while the Athletics are 3-7 in Graveman’s last 10 home starts. Houston are 2-7 in the last 9 meetings in Oakland and are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings. The pitching is a wash and the game more of a toss up then anything so perhaps the team with playoff hopes…
