The San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals meet up in the second half of a double header on Wednesday night with Andrew Cashner going head to head with Jaime Garcia.
The Padres got rained out last night with Rea expected to go up against Carlos Martinez and with the same pitching matchup going in the first part of the double header, the Friars send one of their biggest trade chips to the bump as he goes up against the veteran in Garcia. San Diego has already sent some pieces out the door this season and they are expected to send quite a few more as the season moves along as they are in a rebuild mode now and could gain some pretty coveted assets in return. San Diego may have a couple of guys on the shelf in this one though as they won’t want to run the risk of any of their trade chips getting injured and while most of them are pitchers there are some quiet milling that they could part with the resurgent Wil Myers.

The Cardinals meanwhile are looking to pull off the double header sweep at Busch Stadium as they need every win they can get at this point as they continue their push at a playoff spot in the second half of the season. St. Louis has some nice pieces to their lineup and some good pitching options in their rotation but they are one team that many are expecting to make some moves at the trade deadline as they need some more pop in their lineup and are desperate for some left handed power. The Cards will look to send Cashner to another loss in what could be one of his last starts with the San Diego organization and with St. Louis likely keeping their lineup intact for both games I think they will be able to reset well after the first game.
The Padres are 4-0 in their last four game two’s of a double header, 7-1 in their last eight games against a lefty, and 0-4 in their last four road games while the Cards are 7-1 in their last eight against a righty, 8-2 in Garcia’s last 10 Wednesday starts, and 2-5 in their last seven Wednesday games. St. Louis is the more desperate team now and while Cashner will likely be out to prove his worth I think the Cards get the win
