The Miami Marlins look to shake off a tough loss to the Philadelphia Phillies last night as they face off again at Citizens Bank on Thursday.
The Marlins dropped a tough one on the road against the Phillies yesterday in a game that stings a little extra for the Fish as they are in a dead heat with the Mets in the NL East and wilc card race and this series with the Phils is very winnable. Miami has been one of the surprise teams in the NL this season and could very well be a team that can make a run into the MLB playoffs as they have a top end pitching ace and a solid lineup that can win a number of different ways, and this is without Dee Gordon who could make a late season return after his PED suspension. Miami will send Tom Koehler to the mound in this one and while he hasn’t been great he will go up against Jerad Eickhoff who has better numbers but is still young and susceptible to mistakes when the lights are brightest.

The Phillies started the season well but have since fallen on tough times and are eight games under the .500 mark and while they can still right the ship it likely won’t be enough for them to get back in the playoff picture. Philly does have a nice future ahead of them though and with Jeremy Hellickson likely to yield a solid return at the deadline they could add even more to their farm system and continue to rebuild after a few dismal seasons.
The Marlins are 7-1 in their last eight overall, 6-0 in their last six against a team with a losing record, and 1-5 in Koehler’s last six against the NL East while the Phillies are 8-20 in their last 28 Thursday games, 6-21 in their last 27 against a team with a winning record, and 1-4 in their last five home games against a righty. The Phillies are getting some love here with Eickhoff on the mound but the Marlins are the more desperate team and frankly the better team and even with Koehler on the mound I like Miami to get it done.
