The Pittsburgh Pirates look to build on their successful series against the Milwaukee Brewers as they continue their home stand and welcome the Philadelphia Phillies to town on Friday.
The Phillies got off to a red hot start this season and looked poised to become the dark horse team of the NL this year but then reality set in and they fell back to where many expected them to be this season. However, the Phils do have a ton of valuable trade chips as the emergence of both Jeanmar Gomez and David Hernandez in the bullpen and the expiring contract of Jeremy Hellickson has all three arms on the radar of contending teams which could bolster Philly’s farm system and help their rebuild along. The Phillies will turn to Zach Eflin in this one as he looks to improve on his 2-3 record and lower his 4.14 ERA but against a struggling Gerrit Cole who will look to regroup after a tough outing his last time through I think he will be in tough.

The Pirates head into tonight’s game sitting a full 8.5 game behind the Cubs for the NL Central division lead but they are just three games back in the wild card race and could use this favourable weekend series against the Phils to propel themselves to the top of the race by the turn of the month. Pittsburgh is 49-46 and haven’t quite lived up to expectations this season but they are expected to make some moves at the trade deadline as they could use another arm in the rotation and possibly another option at the plate but just how much they are willing to give up will determine if and who they acquire and could shape the landscape of the playoff picture immensely.
The Phils are 4-1 in their last five road games against a righty, 5-2 in their last seven road games, and 2-9 in their last 11 road games against a team with a winning record while the Pirates are 4-1 in their last five series openers, 11-5 in their last 16 overall and 1-4 in their last five against the NL East. Philadelphia is on tough here against Gerrit Cole and while the odds are chalk I think the Bucs and Cole respond in a big way and get a multi run win here
