On Saturday, the MLB is bringing us another match-up between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees from Yankee Stadium.
This will be game two of the set. On Friday in the opener, the Yankees eked out a 3-2 victory.
USA TODAY Sports
For Saturday’s game, the Giants will be rolling out right-hander Jeff Samardzija for the start. In his 19 appearances with a 9-5 record this year, Samardzija has put up a 4.05 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP in 122.1 innings. In his last start in San Diego, Samardzija logged five innings with five hits and four earned in a no-decision.
Helping out at the plate is a pretty well-rounded crew of Giants hitters. Brandon Belt heads things up with 93 hits, 46 runs, 10 homers and 47 RBI. Brandon Crawford holds 90 hits with 39 runs and 61 RBI thus far. Buster Posey has played well for a backstop on 90 hits with 54 runs, 12 homers and 44 RBI in 2016.
As for the Yankees, they’ll be rolling out right-hander Ivan Nova for Saturday’s match-up. In his 19 appearances (13 starts), Nova holds a 7-5 record with a 4.92 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 86 innings of work. In a win over the Orioles his last time out, Nova managed six innings with four hits and just one earned.
The New York lineup features a few quite noteworthy batters this year. Carlos Beltran has hit 99 times with 20 homers, 60 RBI and 47 runs. Didi Gregorius sits on 95 hits with 42 runs, 11 homers and 41 RBI so far. Starlin Castro has hit 93 times with 37 runs, 11 homers and 38 RBI. Castro bagged three hits on in Friday’s game.
The Giants are 1-6 in their last seven game twos of a series, and 1-6 in their last seven interleague games. San Francisco is also 35-17 in their last 52 games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30, and 0-6 in their last six road games.
As for the Yankees, they’re 4-1 in Nova’s last five starts versus a team with a winning record, and 11-4 in Nova’s last 15 interleave starts. New York is also 5-2 in Nova’s last seven games with four days’ rest, and 2-6 in Nova’s last eight Saturday starts.
This is a tough one to call, so I’m staying away from it. That said, I like the under here with the solid pitching matchup, and I’ll give the Yankees a slight advantage.
