At Nationals Park in DC on Sunday, the San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals will be wrapping up their weekend MLB series.
This will be the third game of the set. On Friday, the Padres managed a 5-3 victory. In Saturday’s game, the Nats scored in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 3-2 win.

Pitching for the Padres on Sunday will be lefty Christian Friedrich. In his 12 starts and 4-6 record this year, Friedrich has managed a 4.55 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP in 65.1 innings of work. In a loss against the Cardinals his last time out, Friedrich put up six hits and four earned in 5.1 innings.
Hitting for the Padres, we’ve got a few notable names. Will Myers is sitting on 101 hits with 64 runs, 20 homers and 61 RBI. Matt Kemp has hit 101 times with 50 runs, 22 homers and 67 RBI. Melvin Upton has 88 hits with 46 runs, 16 homers and 45 RBI this year.
On Sunday, the Nationals will be bringing out RHP Lucas Giolito for the start with Joe Ross still on the shelf. Giolito has started two games this year, with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP in 7.2 innings of total work.
Washington has a few notable hitters on their roster as well. Daniel Murphy is way out front on 124 hits, 56 runs, 19 homers and 71 RBI. Wilson Ramos is also playing well on 98 hits with 41 runs, 13 homers and 50 RBI. Anthony Rendon has hit 89 times with 57 runs, 11 homers and 36 RBI in 2016.
The Padres are 18-40 in their last 58 Sunday games, and 18-42 in their last 60 game threes of a series. San Diego is also 0-4 in Friedrich’s last four starts on grass, and 0-4 in Friedrich’s last four starts overall.
Meanwhile, the Nationals are 0-4 in their last four games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30, and 2-4 in their last six home games. Washington is also 38-18 in their last 56 Sunday games, and 2-4 in their last six games overall.
I don’t feel like the Padres will bring enough firepower at the plate to help out Friedrich, so give me the Nationals here.
