The Kansas City Royals look to shake off a series finale loss to the Rangers yesterday as they welcome another AL West team to town on Monday in the LA Angels.
The Angels are coming off an absolute thrashing at the hands of the Houston Astros as the AL West contenders hung 13 runs on the Halos and now they have to deal with a series full of the defending World Series champions at Kauffman Stadium. Los Angeles has never been able to live up to the hype over the last handful of seasons despite always seeming to have one of the top rosters in the American League, and while they have fallen off a bit this year and expectations weren’t nearly as high they still have been considered a big disappointment. LA may be on a fire sale upcoming as everyone aside from Mike Trout could be on the move and that might be a blessing for this group that hasn’t been able to sustain any long term success and seems to be stuck in a rut. The Angels will send Hector Santiago to the mound who will face off and go pitch for pitch with Ian Kennedy.
USA TODAY Sports
The Royals head into a start of the week set with the Angels looking to get back in the race in the AL Central as they currently trail the Cleveland Indians but if there is any team you have to watch out for it is the defending champions who are trying to defend their crown. KC has a different look to them this year as they have had some pieces leave via free agency and just as many that have suffered season altering injuries but they could make some moves at the trade deadline and jump back into the fold in the American League. Kennedy will look to improve to 7-8 and lower his 4.28 ERA and will match up with Santiago who has actually come out on the winning end of some high scoring games and carries an 8-4 record with a 4.32 ERA.
The Angels are 5-0 in their last five against the AL Central, 0-4 in their last four road games, and 20-6 in their last 26 starts from Santiago while the Royals are 5-2 in their last seven Monday starts, 20-9 in their last 29 against a lefty, and 0-4 in Kennedy’s last four starts. The Royals are usually strong at home but I like the value on the Angels here as they rebound after getting thrashed last night as Santiago gets another victory.
