The Pittsburgh Pirates host the Seattle Mariners Wednesday with both needing wins.
The Seattle Mariners have been playing well the past week or so as they try to position themselves for a Wild Card. The Mariners have been playing well the past week with wins in four of five after knocking off Pittsburgh 7-4 Tuesday to stay in the Wild Card conversation. M’s starter Felix Hernandez improved to 5-4 with all four runs plated on nine hits. Seattle pounded out eleven hits and walked four times with Franklin Guiterrez going deep and scoring twice while Kyle Seager homered with two RBI’s and two runs. The Mariners send left hander James Paxton to the mound Wednesday for his first career meeting with the Pirates. Paxton comes off a 2-1 win at Toronto with a run given up on three hits over seven frames.

The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t been able to go on a long winning streak which has them third in the National League Central. The Pirates saw their modest two game winning streak end Tuesday with the pitching having problems. Pitt starter Francisco Liriano fell to 6-10 with all seven runs scoring on eight hits including a pair of long balls through 3.1 innings. The Buccos logged 12 hits with Liriano and Gregory Polanco smacking solo bombs. Gerrit Cole toes the rubber for the first time against the Mariners on Wednesday. Cole was a hard luck 4-1 loser to visiting Philadelphia with a run given up on six hits in six frames.
The over is 7-2 in Seattle’s last 9 interleague games and the under is 10-3 in their last 13 road games while the Mariners are 4-12 in their last 16 road games. The over is 13-4 in Pittsburgh’s last 17 interleague games and is 6-2 in their last 8 versus American League West while going 19-7-1 in their last 27 Wednesday games. The under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings. I personally think time is running out on the Pirates or perhaps they simply are not that good…
