Headed our way on Thursday in MLB action, we’ve got game one of a four-game weekend set at Marlins Park between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets.
The Cardinals are coming off a three-matchup visit with the Mets. St. Louis and New York split the first two games, then in Wednesday’s rubber match, the Cardinals scored twice in the ninth to secure a 5-4 victory and series win.

As for the Marlins, they’re fresh off a brief stint with the Phillies. Miami and Philadelphia also split their first two games, and on Wednesday, Miami blew out Philly 11-1.
Taking the mound for the Cardinals on Thursday will be right-hander Michael Wacha. In his 20 starts and 5-7 record this year, Wacha has reached a 4.37 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP in 115.1 innings overall. In a no-decision against the Dodgers his last time out, Wacha posted six innings with 10 hits and two earned.
Backing things up at the plate, we’ve got a pretty good St. Louis crew. Stephen Piscotty holds 106 hits with 58 runs, 14 homers and 58 RBI so far. Aldemys Diaz has put up 107 hits with 62 runs, 13 homers and 53 RBI. Matt Carpenter is effective these days on 85 hits with 56 runs, 14 homers and 53 RBI but is currently still sidelined due to injury.
Over on the Marlins’ side, we’ll be getting another look at right-hander Jose Fernandez on Thursday. Over his 19 starts and 12-4 record this year, Fernandez holds a nice 2.54 ERA with a 1.03 WHIP on the year. Against the Mets his last time out, Fernandez gave up seven hits and two runs in a win over seven innings.
Taking the swings, the Miami batting order is a pretty fierce crew up top. Martin Prado heads the charge on 122 hits with 44 runs and 36 RBI. Christian Yelich has put up 113 hits with 52 runs, 10 hits and 55 RBI. Marcel Ozuna holds 109 hits, 55 runs, 17 homers and 53 RBI so far.
The Cardinals are 21-8 in their last 29 Thursday games, and 13-5 in their last 18 road games. St. Louis is also 0-5 in Wacha’s last five starts against the National League East, and 7-1 in Wacha’s last eight Thursday starts.
As for the Marlins, they’re 9-1 in their last 10 Thursday games, and 17-5 in their last 22 against the National League Central. Miami is also 4-1 in Fernandez’s last five Thursday starts, and 40-16 in Fernandez’s last 56 starts overall.
This should be a great game, but I’ll go with Fernandez and the home-town Marlins here.
