Wrapping up our packed July MLB schedule on Sunday evening, we’ve got a great matchup ahead between the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago Cubs from Wrigley Field.
This will be game three of the set. In Friday’s opener, the Cubs blew out Seattle 12-1. On Saturday, the Mariners trailed heading into the late stages of the game, but were able to roar back for a 4-1 victory.

Taking the hill for the Mariners on Sunday will be ace vet Felix Hernandez. Over his 12 starts and 5-4 record this year, Hernandez has put up a 3.45 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP in 75.2 innings of work overall. During a win his last time out in Pittsburgh, Hernandez managed nine hits with four runs in six innings.
Giving help with the bats, we’ve got some notable names in the Seattle order. Robinson Cano has been the star this year with 124 hits, 67 runs, 22 homers and 63 RBi. As for Kyle Seager, he has 108 hits with 59 runs, 20 homers and 67 RBI. Cano and Seager came up empty on Saturday, though. Nelson Cruz is sitting on 105 hits with 58 runs, 25 homers and 66 RBI so far.
As for the Cubs, they’ll be trotting out RHP Kyle Hendricks on Sunday. In his 20 appearances (19 starts) with a 9-7 record this year, Hendricks owns a 2.39 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP in 116.2 innings. Hendricks posted a loss last time out against the White Sox, giving up six hits and three earned in 5.2 innings.
Chicago isn’t exactly hurting for talent at the plate, of course. Kris Bryant has hit 112 times with 82 runs, 26 homers and 68 RBI. Anthony Rizzo sits on 104 hits with 61 runs, 24 homers and 79 RBI. Ben Zobrist has put up 96 hits with 64 runs, 13 hoers and 51 RBI.
The Mariners are 2-7 in their last nine Sunday games, and 1-4 in their last five game threes of a series. Seattle is also 4-1 in Hernandez’s last five interleague starts, and 6-2 in Hernandez’s last eight starts overall.
As for the Cubs, they’re 4-1 in their last five game threes of a series, and 6-1 in Hendricks’ last seven starts. Chicago is also 4-1 in Hendricks’ last five Sunday starts, and 23-8 in Hendricks’ last 31 home starts.
I like the Cubs to take the win here, but it might be a lower-scoring game with Hernandez on the mound.
