The Subway Series takes centre stage in New York on Monday as the Yankees and Mets do battle at Citi Field with both teams looking to shake off some rust.
The Yankees’ polarizing season continues to unfold as they have played their way back into contention for an AL wild card spot but are also unloading some assets as they look to a rebuild and likely aren’t done yet as teams are ringing for Carlos Beltran. The Pinstripers head into this season sitting at the .500 mark and are in fourth place in the AL East and now with their two biggest trade chips off the market as Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller have been shipped out I think we can assume the Yanks will take a bit of a hit down the stretch as their pen was probably their strongest unit. CC Sabathia will get the call here as he continues a nice rebound season and he will match up against Logan Verrett who is 3-6 with a 4.12 ERA.

The Mets meanwhile have been a train wreck of late and have gone from possibly winning the NL East to being on the cusp of missing out altogether as their swoon continues post all start break. New York came into the season as the defending National League champions and were expected to get back to that point this year but right now things look bleak as they have underachieved at the plate all season long and their pitching aside from Noah Syndergaard has been a bit of a disappointment. The Mets could make a move tomorrow as the trade deadline expires and it could propel them back into the fold but at the moment they are a tough side to bet on right now.
The Yankees are 6-1 in their last seven against the NL East, 1-4 in their last five interleague road games, and 8-3 in their last 11 against a team with a winning record while the Mets are 23-5 in their last 28 Monday games, 2-8 in their last 10 home games, and 1-6 in Verrett’s last seven starts. The Yanks are unloading but are still playing better than the Mets and I think Sabathia gets another win here against their cross town rivals.
