On Thursday in MLB action from sunny Tropicana Field, the Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Rays will be wrapping up their series.
This will be game four of the set. The Royals took the first pair of games by a combined 5-2 score, and on Wednesday the Rays crushed KC 12-0.
USA TODAY Sports
For Thursday’s game, the Royals will be bringing out RHP Ian Kennedy. In his 21 starts and 6-9 record this year, Kennedy owns a 4.23 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP in 121.1 innings. Taking a tough-luck no-decision against the Rangers his last time out, Kennedy put up six hits with one earned in seven innings.
At the plate, Kansas City has a few notable names to talk about. Eric Hosmer has put up 112 hits with 53 runs, 15 homers and 59 RBI. Alcides Escobar is sitting on 111 hits with 35 runs, 27 RBI and 14 doubles. Salvador Perez has put up 94 hits with 40 runs, 16 homers and 47 RBI for his part. Homer, Escobar and Perez combined for just one hit on Wednesday.
Over on the Rays’ side, we’ll be seeing LHP Drew Smyly take the mound Thursday. In 20 starts and a 3-11 record this year, Smyly holds a 5.29 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP in 117.1 innings. In a win against the Yankees his last time out, Smyly logged four hits with two earned in six innings.
It’s pretty easy to find the stars in the Tampa Bay batting order. Evan Longoria is way out front on 116 hits with 53 runs, 23 homers and 59 RBI. Brad Miller sits on 89 hits with 58 runs, 18 homers and 40 RBI. Miller managed a homer on Wednesday. Logan Forsythe has put up 86 hits with 47 runs, 10 homers and 29 RBI.
The Royals are 13-5 in their last 18 game fours of a series, and 0-6 in their last six games versus a left-handed starter. Kansas City is also 0-5 in Kennedy’s last five starts with four days’ rest, and 0-6 in Kennedy’s last six starts.
As for the Rays, they’re 1-5 in their last six Thursday games, and 1-6 in Smyly’s last seven starts. Tampa Bay is also 0-4 in Smyly’s last four starts with four days’ rest and 1-6 in Smyly’s last seven starts versus the American League Central.
I like the Kansas City offense to come out swinging here and cruise to a Royals victory, bombing Smyly in the process.
