The Philadelphia Phillies travel to Petco Park to open a weekend series with the San Diego Padres.
The Philadelphia Phillies only realistic goal is reaching .500 although that will need help from the offense. The Phillies couldn’t stretch their winning streak to three Thursday thanks to a 3-2, ten inning loss to San Francisco. Phils starter Vince Velasquez gave up both runs on three hits three free passes with Severino Gonzalez serving up a 10th inning homer to get the loss. Philadelphia was held to four hits and seven walks with Aaron Altherr and Freddy Galvis driving in runs. Jeremy Hellickson toes the rubber for the first time this season versus San Diego. Hellickson comes off of a 9-5 win at Atlanta with three runs given up on nine hits over 5.2 innings.

The San Diego Padres have made a few trades and are getting a look at some players that could be on the roster in 2017. The Padres are coming off a 12-3 rout of Milwaukee Wednesday where both the arms and bats contributed. SD starter Edwin Jackson gave up all three runs on eight hits through eight innings to up his record to 2-2. San Diego pounded out 14 hits and walked five times with Jabari Blash going solo while Yangervis Solarte went 3-5 with a homer, three RBI’s and four runs. Wil Myers and Christian Bethancourt drove in two runs apiece while Travis Jankowski scored three times. The Padres are scheduled to send Christian Friedrich to the bump to oppose visiting Philadelphia. Friedrich did not get a decision in a 2-1 win versus the Reds last time out despite allowing one run in six frames.
The under is 7-1 in Hellickson’s last 8 on grass and is 7-1 in Hellickson’s last 8 starts overall. The over is 6-2 in San Diego’s last 8 versus the National League East and the Padres are 11-4 in their last 15 Friday games while the over is 10-3 in Friedrich’s last 13 starts on grass. The over is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings in San Diego and Philadelphia are 37-14 in the last 51 meetings. As a fan I’m almost in disbelief when the Phillies score and I hope to be shocked Friday…
