Sunday afternoon in MLB action from Yankees Stadium, the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees will be finishing out their weekend series.
This will be game three of the set. In Friday’s opener, New York came out on top 6-3. On Saturday, the Yankees secured an 8-4 victory to make it two in a row.

Pitching for the Rays on Sunday will be RHP Jake Odorizzi. Over his 24 starts and 6-5 record this year, Odorizzi owns a 3.82 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP in 136.2 innings overall. In a no-decision his last time out in Toronto, Odorizzi gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings.
It’s pretty easy to find the big hitters in the Rays lineup. Evan Longoria leads the charge here on 127 hits with 59 runs, 26 homers and 66 RBI. Brad Miller is coming up behind with 100 hits, 56 runs, 21 homers and 52 RBI. Logan Forsythe has hit 97 times with 55 runs and 34 RBI. ****
On the other side, we’ll be seeing RHP Luis Severino for the Yankees on Sunday. Over his 11 games (eight starts) and 1-7 record this year, Severino has put up a 6.42 ERA with a 1.47 WHIP in 47.2 innings of work. Severino took a loss in his last outing, giving up five earned on seven hits across 4.1 innings in Boston.
New York still has a little power left in their bats in this “white flag” season. Didi Gregorious has hit 112 times with 49 runs, 14 homers and 50 RBI. Starlin Castro holds 112 hits with 46 runs and 53 RBI. As for Jacoby Ellsbury, he’s got 107 hits with 49 runs and 38 RBI.
The Rays are 2-6 in their last eight Sunday games, and 3-7 in Odorizzi’s last 10 starts. Tampa Bay is also 1-5 in Odorizzi’s last six Sunday starts, and 0-4 in Odorizzi’s last four road starts.
As for the Yankees, they’re 5-1 in their last six Sunday games, and 7-2 in their last nine game threes of a series. New York is also 1-10 in Severino’s last 11 starts on grass, and 0-9 in Severino’s last nine starts.
This looks like an over game to me, so I’ll take that. It could get messy in either direction, but I’ll favor Odorizzi and the Rays slightly.
