The New York Mets look to play their way out of their current funk as they take to the road ro face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
The Mets have had a pretty tumultuous season and sit just a single game above the .500 mark heading into tonight’s game but while they are well back of the Nationals for top spot in the division they are just two games behind the Marlins and Cardinals for the second wild card spot. New York is the reigning National League champions and had a ton of hope heading into the year but they have been very inconsistent and have lost some pretty questionable games this season and while they did make a push to acquire Jay Bruce to help their bats it still hasn’t helped them much. New York will send Bartolo Colon to the bump here who will match up against Robbie Ray who has been shelled on the regular this season despite having pretty ludicrous strikeout numbers.

Arizona has had a disappointing campaign and that continued yesterday as Zack Greinke was absolutely shelled by the Boston Red Sox and managed just four outs before getting pulled which is a microcosm of how their season has played out. The Snakes sit second to last in the National League only besting the lowly Atlanta Braves but they could be in a decent position here at home with Ray on the mound, who as mentioned has a knack for striking batters out with high frequency and faces a Mets side that has had trouble at the plate all season long. The D-Backs are a measly 2-13 in their last 15 series openers and will need a strong outing here against Colon who continues to pitch pretty well for the Mets.
New York is 3-13 in their last 16 against the NL West, 9-4 in Colon’s last 13 starts, and 1-4 in their last five overall while the D-Backs are 0-4 in their last four Monday games, 2-7 in Ray’s last nine starts, and 7-19 in their last 26 home games against a righty. The Mets have struggled against some of the league’s bottom feeders this season and while they should be able to hit Ray I fear they will succumb to the the strikeouts here as Arizona gets a big win.
