The Cincinnati Reds look to keep their bats hot as they face off against the Miami Marlins at home on Thursday after a big win yesterday.
The Marlins are starting to play their way out of the NL wild card picture and could very well miss out on the playoffs altogether this season after having so much promise heading into the all star break. However, a second half slide and the injury to Giancarlo Stanton has their hopes in shambles right now and their play of late is starting to indicate that as fact as they are losing winnable games and are not looking like a playoff caliber team. The Fish will send their ace to the mound here though as Jose Fernandez gets the ball as he will face off against journeyman Dan Straily who is 8-6 with a 3.75 ERA this season but pales in comparison to Fernandez who is 12-6 with a 2.81 mark and continues to carry one of the better K-rates in the league.

Cincy has been an interesting team to watch this season as they weren’t expected to do a whole lot this season but they are starting to play well now that most of their big pieces are on to greener pastures. The Reds still have some pop in their lineup, namely in the form of Joey Votto and Adam Duvall and one of the more underrated arms in baseball in Anthony DeSclafani but on the whole they aren’t a very good team and will be in tough here against one of the better pitchers in baseball.
The Marlins are 9-2 in their last 11 Thursday games, 40-19 in Fernandez’ last 59 starts, and 5-2 in his last seven starts against the NL Central while the Reds are 6-0 in Straily’s last six starts, 4-17 in their last 21 game four’s of a series, and 5-1 in Straily’s last six home starts. The Marlins are desperate here and with their ace on the bump they have to be the play despite the value with the Reds.
