The Boston Red Sox look to take over top spot in the AL East with a road win in Tampa Bay on Tuesday as they face off against the Rays.
The Boston Red Sox look to stay red hot and continue their chase for the AL East crown as they continue their series on the road with the Rays here and they will send Clay Buchholz to the mound as he will face off against Chris Archer. Boston has gone from potentially battling for a wild card spot to emerging as a co-favourite to win the AL East division and if they can get continued production out of their young guns they could very well take down the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles for the AL East crown and head into the playoffs on some kind of tear. However, Buchholz has been struggling mightily as he is 4-9 with a 5.55 ERA this season and while Archer hasn’t had the year many anticipated that he would he is certainly the better of the two options here and gives the Rays a great chance to grab a home win.

The Rays have had a tough go of things this season and have certainly fallen well short of expectations that were pretty lofty in the preseason and while there is more to it then their rotation underachieving that is certainly a place to start. Archer remains one of the best young pitchers in baseball but he has had a tough follow up this season after being among the league’s best last year and while guys like Jake Odorizzi haven’t pitched their best either I think a lot of the fall lands on Archer as the team’s ace. Tampa is red hot though winning six of their last seven and could spoil the party for the Rays in this one as again they have a pretty sizeable pitching edge and are playing at the Trop.
Boston is 1-4 in Buchholz’ last five road starts, 5-2 in their last seven road games, and 8-20 in their last 28 Buchholz starts against a team with a losing record while the Rays are 5-1 in their last six home games, 4-0 in their last four against a righty, and 4-1 in their last five during game two of a series. Boston is the more desperate team but the Rays are playing very well right now and with Archer looking to make a statement I think we see it here.
