Headed our way in MLB action on Wednesday, we’ve got the series finale between the Houston Astros and the Pittsburgh Pirates from PNC Park.
This will be game three of the set. On Monday, the Astros won 3-1. In Tuesday’s game, Pittsburgh struck back with a 7-1 victory.

Taking the hill for the Astros on Wednesday will be right-hander Collin McHugh. Over 25 starts and a 7-10 record this year, McHugh holds a 4.99 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP in 137 innings.
The Astros have a pretty enviable hitting lineup. Jose Altuve owns 180 hits with 90 runs, 20 homers and 83 RBI. George Springer has hit 131 times with 93 runs, 25 homers and 72 RBI. Carlos Correa has hit 125 times with 61 runs, 18 homers and 86 RBI.
Over on the Pirates’ side, we’ll be seeing RHP Gerrit Cole on the mound Wednesday. In 19 games and a 7-8 start this year, Cole holds a 3.30 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP in 109 innings. In his last start against the Marlins, Cole put up 6.2 innings with 12 hits and three earned for a no-decision.
The Pittsburgh hitters aren’t exactly slouches either. Starling Marte has 133 hits with 65 runs and 41 RBI. Josh Harrison has hit 113 times with 47 runs and 49 RBI. Andrew McCutchen has produced 64 runs, 110 hits, 17 homers and 52 RBI.
The Astros are 13-3 in their last 16 Wednesday games, and 5-0 in McHugh’s last five inter-league starts. Houston is also 41-20 in McHugh’s last 61 starts on grass, and 1-4 in McHugh’s last five starts in game three of a series.
As for the Pirates, they’re 20-6 in Cole’s last 26 starts in game three of a series, and 9-3 in Cole’s last 12 inter-league starts. Pittsburgh is also 2-8 in Cole’s last 10 starts overall, and 1-5 in Cole’s last six home starts.
I’m going to go with the trends here and take the Astros for the victory, as McHugh usually pitches pretty well these days. Sounds like another Houston win.
