The Line: Houston Astros -150 / Oakland Athletics +140 --- Over/Under: 8.5 See the Latest Odds
The Houston Astros look to make up some ground in the AL Wild Card race as they host the Oakland Athletics in an AL West show down on Monday.
The Athletics look to continue their role as spoiler in the American League and what better way to do so than against a division rival on the road and that is exactly where they find themselves on Monday as they take on the Houston Astros. Oakland is a full 14 games back of the Orioles for the second wild card spot in the American League and even more so in the race for the AL West crown so it is safe to say at this point that we will not see them in October but they have some solid pieces and play a great style of baseball that always keeps them competitive on a nightly basis. Oakland will send Sean Manaea to the mound on his one as he looks for his sixth win of the season and to lower his 4.45 ERA and he will match up with Joe Musgrove who is 1-2 with a 5.21 ERA as he makes his transition from the bullpen into the rotation.

The Astros were projected as a potential World Series winner in the preseason and while that is still certainly plausible they have fallen out of the conversation as a serious contender despite having a well balanced lineup. Houston is led of course by MVP favourite Jose Altuve who is putting up a massive season statistically but he has some company as Carlos Correa is looking like the real deal and the two of them are shaping up to lead the core of this Astros group that should be in the running for the next handful of seasons. Houston does need their rotation to come around a bit if they are going to find success in the postseason as they have been getting shelled for the most part and aren’t scaring many lineups like they did a year ago.
The A’s are 8-3 in their last 11 Monday games, 4-9 in their last 13 overall, and 0-5 in their last five against the AL West while the Astros are 7-1 in their last eight overall, 28-9 in their last 37 against a team with a losing record, and 3-7 in their last 10 home games. Oakland is a scrappy bunch but are in tough here and with the Astros playing so well right now it is tough to deny them here.
