The Washington Nationals open a series Monday at the rival Philadelphia Phillies.
The Washington Nationals seem to be the winner of the National League East unless they completely collapse. The Nationals are obviously a good team but sometimes I feel they just ’show up’ sometimes and Sunday was one of those times in a 5-3 defeat to visiting Colorado for back to back losses. Nats starter Lucas Giolito was charged with four runs on six hit including a pair of homers over five frames. The Washington offense was stagnant with six hits that saw Bryce Harper, Trea Turner and Wilson Ramos going deep. The Nationals kick off the series on the mound with Tanner Roark on Monday night. Roark comes off a 10-8 loss to Baltimore with five runs plated (four earned) on seven hits and three BB over five innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies goal of reaching .500 has gotten away from them but this team is still far and away better then in recent years. The Phillies come off a 5-1 win at Citi Field Sunday and beating the Mets is always big for this team. Phils starter Vince Velasquez gave up a lone run on five hits through five innings while four relievers put up zeros. Philadelphia mustered eight hits and walked twice with AJ Ellis smacking a two run double while Jimmy Parades drove in a run and scored. The Phillies open the series on the mound with rookie Jake Thompson who is looking for his second win. Thompson has gone 1-3 in four starts with a 1.81 WHIP and 9.78 ERA.
The under is 6-2 in Washington’s last 8 Monday games and the over is 8-3 in their last 11 overall while going 8-3 in their last 11 on grass. Philadelphia are 6-21 in their last 27 Monday games and the over is 19-6-2 in their last 27 overall while going 19-6-2 in their last 27 on grass. I’ll back Washington who SHOULD have an edge here…
