The Seattle Mariners look to snap out of their ugly funk that included an extra innings loss last night as they continue their series on the road with the Texas Rangers.
The M’s have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games and have really picked an inopportune time to go on a slide as they are in the midst of a wild card hunt in the American League and last night’s loss is a microcosm of their season as they lost in 10 innings after taking the lead in the top. Seattle though will get their best chance to grab a win in this series as they send Felix Hernandez to the mound here as he will face off against Martin Perez and while the King has been much better at home than on the road this season and throughout his career he and his team are basically in a must win game tonight. Hernandez is 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA this season while Perez is 8-10 with a 4.45 ERA and has been a disappointing part of the Rangers rotation that has otherwise been very solid this season.

The Rangers look to gain even more ground on the Mariners and Astros in the AL West and their spot in the playoffs is basically a formality at this point as they are far and away the best team in the division and have their sights set on top spot in the league. Texas can beat you in a number of different ways and they are never out of a game as we saw last night as they can manufacture runs with the best of them and while they face off against a very tough pitcher in this one they have the depth to wear him down and then exploit the bullpen of the Mariners.
Seattle is 1-5 in their last six games following a loss, 0-4 in their last four overall, and 5-0 in Hernandez’ last five starts while the Rangers are 7-0 in their last seven against the AL West, 42-18 in their last 60 home games, and 9-1 in Perez’ last 10 home starts. This is a must win type game for the visitors and I think they get back in the win column with an inspired effort after a tough loss last night.
